Cuba 2018: Dance, Music and the People Behind Them
In 2018, DC Casineros completed a cultural exchange trip to Cuba. It was another chapter in our longstanding collaboration with Cuban artists, including the Rueda All Stars in Santiago de Cuba.
The purpose of this exchange was to learn directly from the people who sustain Cuban music and dance: to listen, train, share and deepen relationships. Casino, Rueda de Casino, Son Cubano and Afro-Cuban dance belong to living communities, with their own names, histories and ways of understanding movement.
Relationships That Continue Beyond a Trip
Our connections with eastern Cuba have shaped the company’s teaching, performance and understanding of Cuban culture. A visit is one part of that story. The relationships with artists, teachers and community tradition bearers continue through our work in Washington, D.C. and through cultural exchange.
